Scholarships
The Alabama Geological Society offers two scholarships, the John S. Winefordner Scholarship and the John G. Newton Scholarship, to geology students at Alabama universities. The purpose of these scholarships is to help defray the costs of education and research. The 2019 announcement can be found here. All materials must be received by March 23, 2018. The awards will be presented at the Spring slide show held in April in Tuscaloosa. For more information, please contact the AGS President.
Student Travel Grants
AGS tries to offer student travel grants to assist undergraduate and graduate students in Alabama studying geology to attend professional conferences in order to present their original research.
EXCITING NEWS
We are excited about some new business adopted including accepting requests to compensate registered students with taking the Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) Fundamental of Geology Examination. The examination is offered this fall on October 4, 2019 in Montgomery. More information about the calendar and the exam is found here. Students are asked to submit a letter to the Board specifying their intention to take the examination. Upon completion of the examination, and with proof of taking the examination, students will be compensated for the $150.00 registration fee. This decision was made to support one of our new mission goals that states: to act as a bridge between students and early career professionals by providing support through these stages of career development.
