Welcome to the Alabama Geological Society
Established in 1963 by some 30-plus geologists, the first constitution of the Alabama Geological Society was adopted in October of that year and defined that the mission of the AGS as:
- To promote geology as a profession and as a science;
- To encourage friendship and cooperation among members and branches of the profession;
- To accumulate and make available geologic knowledge; and
- To encourage public appreciation of the utility and application of geological science.

Alabama Geological society Field Trip Information
The Alabama Geological Society presents:
57th Annual Field Trip
"Recent Mapping and Geochronology in the Southern Appalachian Thrust Belt of Alabama"
March 2-4 2023
Oxford, Alabama
The 57th Alabama Geological Society field trip will bridge specialties and link trips over previous years that have focused on deformational structures in the Valley and Ridge and Piedmont provinces of the southern Appalachian thrust belt by presenting an integrated analysis of (a) Paleozoic clastic stratigraphic units, (b) metamorphic units in the Blue Ridge, and (c) geochronology and thermochronology data. Stops will be chosen near well-exposed, easily accessed outcrops that have available geochronology data and have been recently mapped through the Geological Survey of Alabama and USGS-supported field investigations. The trip will begin on Thursday night at a pre-trip mixer where a brief introductory lecture will be given followed by virtual reality viewing of various Paleozoic outcrops. A full day trip on Friday will focus on clastic stratigraphic units ranging in age from the Cambrian to the Pennsylvanian. A half-day trip on Saturday will focus on units in the western and eastern Blue Ridge. At each stop, stratigraphic and structural context will be discussed before presenting geochronology data, with the intent to explore the spatial and geologic context of the data in the field. We hope this forum will provide an opportunity for attendees to immerse themselves in thrust belt geology in an open-format setting while also allowing tectonic specialist to interact and converse about evolving models for thrust belt evolution.
